The film

People support causes — good works.  Awareness and the ability to relate to the cause are mandatory for this support to happen. This climb for The Chuñavi Fund provides a higher profile for everyday people to learn about the impact of Paul’s work with an emphasis placed on the organizational support and story of Mano a Mano.

The climbers are from various walks of life, doing something they are passionate about while trying to make a difference. The climb provides a cinematic symbolic image of the teamwork, obstacles and triumph of people gathering for a common goal. The film seeks to energize others to partner with Mano a Mano to reach that goal of creating sustainable communities throughout Bolivia.

Media Ventures will start production this May on a feature length documentary film that will explore the remarkable story of Mano a Mano International, but also reveal how partnerships between adventure travel companies and non-profit organizations are creating successful business models benefiting local communities. These benefits go beyond the communities served — travelers who partake in outreach programs gain a unique cultural experience while helping others, providing a deeper meaning to the travel experience.

What grew from a truly grassroots backyard garage operation where a handful of volunteers sorted through unused medical supplies and then transported it to Bolivia in checked luggage on commercial aircraft, evolved into an operation that now builds reservoirs, roads, medical clinics, and schools. Today Mano a Mano also owns and operates an expanding aviation program with two airplanes flying medical and transport missions throughout Bolivia. All of this was accomplished in just 15 years with only a handful of people running the organization.

But getting to where Mano a Mano is today was far from easy. There have been major setbacks and huge obstacles that had to be overcome. Through this film we’ll reveal the deeply personal stories of those who built the organization from the ground up, and meet Bolivians who have benefited from the life saving services provided by Mano a Mano.

We’ll take to the skies over Bolivia with Mano a Mano and experience the day in the life of pilot Anthony Murrin. Every day presents new challenges from unpredictable mountain flying to landing on remote runways where cows become the hazard rather than the high crosswinds. At times flying in Bolivia can be a hair-raising experience, but it’s the motivation behind the flights that make it worthwhile. Anthony’s story is a compelling tale of adventure punctuated by intense moments where life hangs in the balance.

Intimate stories like Anthony’s are the foundation on which the film is created. The intent of the film is not only to bring awareness to the program, it’s about the drama behind the scenes and the personal narratives that make organizations successful. In the end, it asks the question — what kind of changes or personal sacrifices have you made to help others?
